Snyder makes reappointment to Certificate of Need Commission

LANSING, Mich. – Gov. Rick Snyder today announced the reappointment of Robert Hughes, of Ada, to the Certificate of Need Commission.

The 11-member commission regulates and balances the cost and quality of, and access to, Michigan's health care system. It also develops, revises and determines approval or disapproval for Certificate of Need standards. No more than six members can be from the same political party.

“Robert has been a tremendous board member and I am confident he will continue the important work of ensuring all Michiganders have access to quality, affordable health care,” Snyder said.

Hughes is president of Advantage Benefits Group, a position he has held for more than 15 years. He has more than 28 years of experience as an employee benefits consultant and is a national and international speaker on employee benefit issues. Hughes previously worked for Grand Rapids Holland Insurance and IRA Financial Center. He is a member of the West Michigan Sports Commission and is an avid cyclist, having co-founded the Bissell pro cycling team. Hughes holds a bachelor’s degree from Michigan State University. He will continue to represent Republicans and companies not self-insured for health coverage.

Hughes will serve a three-year term expiring Jan. 1, 2017, and his appointment is subject to the advice and consent of the Senate.
