LANSING, Mich. – Gov. Rick Snyder today announced four appointments and two reappointments to the Michigan boards of architects, professional engineers and professional surveyors.
Created in 1980, the groups regulate the practices of professional architects, engineers and surveyors.
"These appointees are experienced in their respective fields, and I appreciate their willingness to serve their state in these roles," Snyder said.
Architects
Dennis King, of West Bloomfield, is appointed and will serve on the Board of Architects. King is currently an architectural consultant and owns the DMKING consulting firm. He recently retired after a 34-year career with Harley Ellis Devereaux, where he worked as a project manager, director of project management, corporate marketing officer, and corporate chairman and CEO. He has more than 45 years of architecture experience. King is a licensed architect in 21 states, and holds USGBC LEED AP Certification. He has received many awards throughout his career, including the American Institute of Architects Michigan Gold Medal in 2010. King holds a bachelor’s degree in architecture from the University of Michigan and is a graduate of Leadership Detroit V. He will represent architects and replaces Paula Van Valkenburgh.
Joseph Welmers, of Brighton, is appointed and will serve on the Board of Architects. Welmers is an estimator with Ideal Contracting. He has previous experience with Granger Construction Company, Bloom General Contracting and W.G. Mills Inc. Welmers is a LEED accredited professional. He holds a bachelor’s degree in construction management from Michigan State University and an MBA from Eastern Michigan University. He will represent the general public and replaces Jeffrey Wilkerson.
Engineers
Charles Hookham, of Ann Arbor, is appointed and will serve on the Board of Professional Engineers. Hookham is vice president of HDR Engineers and his project experience includes work with DTE Energy, Consumers Energy, and several other utilities across the country. He is a member of the Association of Energy Engineers and the American Society of Civil Engineers. Hookham also serves on the Energy Commission for the City of Ann Arbor. He holds a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Illinois and an MBA in finance from Eastern Michigan University. He will represent professional engineers and replaces George Karmo.
Cary Junior, of Ferndale, is reappointed to the Board of Professional Engineers. Junior is the general manager of Malise Associates Inc., a small business enterprise headquartered in Detroit. He is also an appointed economic development official with Royal Oak Charter Township and a Food Hub Consultant with the Center for Regional Food Systems at Michigan State University. He previously worked for White Construction, Walbridge Aldinger and Barton Malow. Junior holds a bachelor’s degree in physics from Morehouse College and a master’s degree in engineering from the University of Michigan. He also completed executive education at Dartmouth College. He will continue to represent the general public.
Surveyors
Steven Gravlin, of Canton, is reappointed to the Board of Professional Surveyors. Gravlin is a senior vice president with Wade Trim Associates, where he has worked for more than 15 years. He has previous experience with Woolpert, Parsons Brinkerhoff, and the Macomb County Road Commission. He holds licenses as a professional engineer in Michigan and as a professional surveyor in both Michigan and Ohio. Gravlin holds a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Michigan and has also studied at California State University and Michigan Technological University. He will continue to represent professional surveyors.
Jeffrey Hertrich, of Grand Ledge, is appointed and will serve on the Board of Professional Surveyors. Hertrich is assistant general counsel with Accident Fund Holdings Inc. He was previously a law clerk with Accident Fund and a legal extern with Neal and Leroy. Hertrich is a member of the Michigan and Illinois state bars and holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from Michigan State University and a degree from Thomas M. Cooley Law School. He will represent the general public and replaces Donnie Whitley.
Members serve four-year terms expiring March 31, 2018, and their appointments are subject to the advice and consent of the Senate.
