Gov. Rick Snyder makes appointment, reappointments to the Michigan Cherry Committee

LANSING, Mich. – Gov. Rick Snyder today announced the appointment of Joseph Muvrin, of Paw Paw, and the reappointments of Daryl Peterson, of Ludington, and Michael DeRuiter, of Hart, to the Michigan Cherry Committee.
The nine-member committee develops and implements marketing efforts for Michigan's cherry industry.
"The cherry industry is an integral part of Michigan’s food and agriculture economy, and I thank these appointees for their service on this important committee,” Snyder said.
Appointment:
Muvrin is the owner of Muvrin Farms, which is a 450-acre fruit farm focused on generating high quality and highly sustainable fruits. He is also responsible for running day to day operations along with long term planning, vendor management, machine maintenance and financial management. Muvrin earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration with a pre-law emphasis from Michigan State University. He will represent District 3 sweet cherry growers and replaces Marc Willmeng.
Reappointments:
Peterson is the president of Bushel Basket Orchards, Inc. He has farmed for 44 years and has 1,100 acres of cherries and apples. He previously served on the West Shore Community College Board of Trustees and the Apple Research Committee. Peterson earned a bachelor’s degree in math and physics from Michigan State University. He will continue to represent District 2 sweet cherry growers.
DeRuiter is the vice president and quality control manager for DeRuiter Farms, Inc. He has farmed for 15 years and manages 950 acres of tart cherries, peaches and apples. He currently serves on the Michigan Farm Bureau Board of Directors and is Chair of the State Young Farmers Committee. DeRuiter earned both a bachelor’s degree in general business and master’s degree from Grand Valley State University. He will continue to represent District 2 tart cherry growers.
Appointees will serve three-year terms expiring Feb. 1, 2019. Their appointments are subject to the advice and consent of the Senate.
