Gov. Rick Snyder makes appointment, reappointments to Dairy Marketing Committee

LANSING, Mich. – Gov. Rick Snyder today announced the appointment of Peter Kleiman, of Wilson, and the reappointments of Timothy Hood, of Paw Paw, Dwight Nash, of Elsie, Kenneth Nobis, of St. Johns, and James Reid, of Jeddo, to the Michigan Dairy Marketing Committee.

The 13-member committee oversees the budget and operations of the dairy producer marketing program, which supports the Michigan dairy industry.

“These committee members are experienced dairy farmers, and I look forward to their contributions to Michigan’s thriving dairy industry,” Snyder said.

Appointment: 
Kleiman has farmed for more than 50 years, owning over 800 acres of land.  He farms corn, oats, alfalfa and hay and is a third generation dairy farmer. Kleiman also served six years in the Michigan National Guard and was elected to serve as the Harris Township Supervisor, a position he currently holds today. He will represent the Michigan Farm Bureau and replaces Anna Link. 

Reappointments: 
Hood is the CEO of Hood Farms and has over 35 years of experience running a dairy farm. He farms 1,100 acres and grows corn and alfalfa and has 490 dairy cows and 420 replacement heifers. Hood Farms is a fourth generation dairy farm which employs 11 non-family members, as well as four of their grown children.  He will continue to represent the Michigan Milk Producers Association.

Nash is a life-long dairy farmer. He has extensive experience on the Clinton County Farm Bureau, serving as the community action group president as well as on the political action committee/candidate evaluation committee.  He will continue to represent Dairy Farmers of America.

Nobis is a partner and owner of Nobis Dairy Farms and has 44 years of experience managing a dairy farm.  He operates a 1,000-cow dairy farm in partnership with his brother and son. Nobis also farms 3,000 acres of corn, alfalfa, soybeans and wheat and is the president of the Michigan Milk Producers Association. He earned a bachelor’s degree in agriculture from Western Michigan University. Nobis will continue to represent the Michigan Milk Producers Association.

Reid is the owner of Reid Dairy Farm and grows corn, soybeans, wheat and hay in addition to having 230 milking and dry dairy cows and 200 dairy heifers. The farm averages 80 pounds of milk per day from 205 milking cows. Reid was named 2012 MSU Dairy Farmer of the Year, taught elementary school, served in the Michigan National Guard, and served as Grant Township Supervisor. He earned an associate’s degree in general studies from St. Clair County Community College and a master’s degree in Elementary Education from Michigan State University.  He will continue to represent the Michigan Milk Producers Association.

Appointees will serve three-year terms expiring Dec. 31, 2018. Their appointments are subject to the advice and consent of the Senate.
