Lt. Gov. Brian Calley makes appointment, reappointments to the Michigan Historical Commission

LANSING, Mich. – Lt. Gov. Brian Calley today announced the appointment of Timothy Chester of Grand Rapids and the reappointments of Susan Safford of Mackinaw City and Larry Wagenaar of Ada to the Michigan Historical Commission.
The Michigan Historical Commission advises the Department of Natural Resources on history programs and approves Michigan Historical Markers. The nine-member commission includes appointees of the Governor, the speaker of the House and the Senate majority leader.
“I thank these appointees for their service on this commission and look forward to their ongoing efforts to preserve Michigan’s history,” Calley said.
Appointment:
Chester is principal at Timothy J. Chester & Associates, LLC, a consulting firm in Grand Rapids. Chester holds a bachelor’s degree in history, a master’s degree in American Culture, and a graduate certificate in museum practice, all from the University of Michigan. He will represent the general public and replaces Richard Micka.
Reappointments:
Safford is the president of the Mackinaw Area Historical Society and is a lighthouse keeper in the Straits of Mackinac. She earned a bachelor’s degree in human ecology from Michigan State University. She will continue to represent the general public.
Wagenaar is the executive director of the Historical Society of Michigan and publisher of Michigan History magazine. He earned a bachelor's degree from Hope College and a master's degree from Kent State University. He will continue to represent the Historical Society of Michigan.
Members will serve four-year terms expiring May 21, 2020. Their appointments are subject to the advice and consent of the Senate.
