Gov. Rick Snyder makes appointments to the State Officers Compensation Commission

LANSING, Mich. – Gov. Rick Snyder today announced the appointments of James Hallan of East Lansing, Nancy Jenkins of Manitou Beach and Joseph Smalley of East Lansing to the State Officers Compensation Commission.
The seven-member board is responsible for determining the salaries and expense allowances of the Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, Secretary of State, members of the state Legislature and justices of the Michigan Supreme Court.
"These individuals have years of experience and I am confident they will serve the people of Michigan well on this commission," Snyder said.
Hallan is president and chief executive officer of the Michigan Retailers Association and the Retailers Insurance Company. Hallan holds a bachelor’s degree in economics and politics and government from Ohio Wesleyan University and a law degree from the Detroit College of Law. He will replace Larry Meyer.
Jenkins is the president of Michigan Strategies and a former state Representative. Jenkins holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism and history from Evangel College in Missouri and a master’s degree in political science from the University of Toledo. She will replace Carol Klenow.
Smalley is the president and founder of Smalley Investments. He has 20 years of experience managing group retirement, 401k, 403b, profit sharing, defined benefit, and workers’ compensation plans. Smalley holds a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and political science from Albion College. He will replace James Middaugh.
Appointees will serve four-year terms expiring Jan. 1, 2020.
