LANSING, Mich. – Lt. Gov. Brian Calley, Rep. Julie Calley and their daughter Karagan are raising awareness and sharing their experience with congenital heart defects during Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Week. Click here to watch the video.
Karagan Calley: Hi, I’m Karagan Calley. February 2018 is a very special month for me and my mom and my dad. It’s when I turn 8 years old and we all recognize a very special week.
Lt. Gov. Calley: Karagan, like many Michigan children, was born with a congenital heart defect. It’s the most common birth defect in America. About 40,000 children are born with a CHD every year.
Rep. Julie Calley: We weren’t aware of the risks every CHD poses, or how prevalent it is. Our pediatrician caught Karagan’s problem in her first checkup. A couple of heart surgeries later and our family is here to tell you the importance of early detection and intervention.
Lt. Gov. Calley: February 7th through 14th is congenital heart defect awareness week- a perfect time for expecting families to learn more about CHD.
