Gov. Rick Snyder makes appointments, reappointment to the State Board of Architects

LANSING, Mich. - Gov. Rick Snyder today announced the appointments of Scott Gustafson of Ypsilanti and Matthew Slagle of Grand Rapids, as well as the reappointment of Joseph Welmers of Brighton to the State Board of Architects.
The nine-member board regulates the practice of architecture and oversees more than 5,000 licensed professionals.
"I thank these individuals for serving on this committee," Snyder said. “Their input and oversight will help maintain sound structures in Michigan.”
Appointments:
Gustafson is a project manager for Neumann Smith Architecture in Southfield and previously worked for various architecture firms in Kansas, Arizona, Colorado and California. He holds a National Architectural Accrediting Board bachelor’s degree in architecture from Kansas State University. He will represent architects and fill a vacancy created by the resignation of Randy Sherman.
Slagle is the principal and director of K-12 education for Tower Pinkster. He serves on the Grand Rapids Public Schools Academy of Design and Construction Board of Directors and volunteers for Habitat for Humanity of Kent County. Slagle holds an associate degree in architecture from Baker College, a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Phoenix, a bachelor’s degree in environmental design and a master’s degree in architecture, both from the University of Colorado. He will represent architects and replace Dennis King.
Reappointment:
Welmers is an estimator for Aristeo Construction. He previously worked for Ideal Contracting, Granger Construction and Bloom General Contracting. He holds a bachelor’s degree in construction management from Michigan State University and a master’s degree in finance from Eastern Michigan University. He will continue to represent the general public.
Gustafson will serve the remainder of a term expiring March 31, 2021. Slagle and Welmers will serve four-year terms expiring March 31, 2022. Their appointments are subject to the advice and consent of the Senate.
