Michigan Jobless Rate Constant During September

Following three consecutive months of jobless rate gains, Michigan’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was unchanged at 4.5 percent during September.
During September, the national unemployment rate receded by one-tenth of a percentage point to 4.1 percent. The statewide rate was four-tenths of a percentage point higher than the national rate, marking the largest difference observed since the start of 2024. Since September 2023, the U.S. unemployment rate inched up by 0.3 percentage points, while the Michigan jobless rate increased by 0.4 percentage points over the year. Michigan’s unemployment rate of 4.5 percent was tied with Ohio and South Carolina as the ninth highest rate in the nation during September. Additionally, Michigan’s jobless rate averaged 4.5 percent during third quarter 2024, 0.6 percentage points above the second quarter unemployment rate of 3.9 percent.
Over the month, Michigan’s labor force was unchanged, while the U.S. workforce inched up by 0.1 percent. Total statewide employment edged down slightly by 0.1 percent, while national unemployment levels rose by 0.3 percent during September. Michigan’s unemployment level advanced by 1.3 percent, while total U.S. unemployment receded by 3.9 percent over the month.
Since September 2023, Michigan’s labor force inched up by 0.2 percent, while the national workforce rose by 0.5 percent. Statewide employment levels decreased by 0.2 percent, contrary to the employment level gains seen nationally (+0.2 percent). Over the year, Michigan’s unemployment total jumped by 10.6 percent, 2.9 percentage points above the national unemployment advance (+7.7 percent).
The Michigan jobless rate was unchanged in September but remained higher than the U.S. rate.
