Total Number of Pharmacies and Drug Stores in Oakland County Decreases Over the Year

Over the last few years, there have been numerous closings of pharmacies across both Michigan and the nation. This month’s Michigan Works! Regional Update will focus on pharmacies in the Oakland County Michigan Works! region. For a more comprehensive analysis on statewide and regional trends, please read this month’s feature article.
In the first quarter of 2024, there were 375 total Pharmacies and drug stores in Oakland County. The number of Pharmacies increased 13.0 percent from first quarter 2014 and outpaced the statewide growth rate of 4.9 percent for that sector over the same time period. Oakland County accounted for 17.3 percent of statewide establishments within Pharmacies and drug stores in first quarter 2024.
Employment at Pharmacies and drug stores in Oakland County edged down 0.2 percent from first quarter 2014 to first quarter 2024 while statewide employment within the sector dipped 13.4 percent. The county employed just over 3,200 workers within the sector in first quarter 2024, accounting for 16.7 percent of total sector employment statewide.
When looking specifically at Pharmacists, Oakland County employed 1,820 in 2023. This was 17.3 percent of all Pharmacists statewide. The median wage for the occupation in Oakland County measured $64.87, slightly more than the statewide median wage for the occupation of $64.74. Pharmacists earn significantly more than the statewide median wage of $22.57 for all occupations in 2023.
According to microdata from the American Community Survey, females accounted for 61.3 percent of Pharmacists in Oakland County. This was much greater than the statewide share of female Pharmacists statewide of 50.3 percent. Oakland County accounted for 35.8 percent of all female Pharmacists statewide.
In Oakland County, there was a larger share of Pharmacists who were Black or African American (8.6 percent) or Asian (19.1 percent) than what is seen statewide. The county accounted for 65.0 percent of all Black or African American Pharmacists and 42.3 percent of all Asian Pharmacists statewide.
Pharmacists in Oakland County were much more diverse than what was observed statewide in 2023.
