Michigan Unemployment Rate Stays Constant in April

Michigan’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was unchanged over the month, remaining at 5.5 percent between March and April.
The national unemployment rate remained steady over the month at 4.2 percent. Michigan’s April jobless rate was 1.3 percentage points higher than the U.S. rate. Over the year, the national unemployment rate advanced by three-tenths of a percentage point, while the statewide unemployment rate increased by 1.1 percentage points. Michigan had the second largest jobless rate in the nation during April, exceeded only by Nevada (5.6 percent).
Michigan’s labor force receded slightly by 0.1 percent over the month, while the national workforce rose by 0.3 percent in April. Total statewide employment was essentially unchanged during April, while the U.S. employment level advanced by 0.3 percent. The number of unemployed people in the state fell by 0.4 percent over the month, while the national count of unemployed rose by 1.2 percent.
Over the year, Michigan’s total workforce advanced by 1.0 percent, an increase 0.9 percentage points below the national labor force gain. Statewide employment edged down by 0.2 percent, while the U.S. employment total increased by 1.5 percent. The number of unemployed people in Michigan increased by 26.4 percent, while the national number of unemployed advanced by 10.4 percent since April 2024.
The Michigan and U.S. unemployment rates held steady in April.
