Outdoor Adventure Center - Senior Stroll: History and Nature at Elmwood Cemetery
Join a naturalist for a casual stroll through one of our state parks or local historic areas. Each month we’ll focus on a topic related to natural or cultural history. Wear your walking shoes and dress for the weather – we’ll go out rain, snow, or shine! Meet at the designated location. Maps will be provided upon registration. Trail conditions vary – see descriptions.
In October, explore one of Michigan’s most historic cemeteries on a guided walking tour of Elmwood Cemetery, Detroit’s oldest still-operating nondenominational cemetery. Designed as a “rural cemetery” and shaped in part by famed landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, Elmwood is the final resting place of mayors, governors, veterans, abolitionists, and many legendary Detroiters like Coleman Young, Martha Jean “The Queen” Steinberg and Fred “Sonic” Smith. The cemetery is also a certified arboretum, with over 1,300 trees and 90-plus species, and is the only place in Detroit to see the historic creekway, Bloody Run.
This two-hour tour offers a lively overview of Elmwood’s history, landscape and nature. Please note that this tour will include a mix of paved roads and inclines, with the possibility of uneven terrain and grassy areas. There are also some paved inclines. The tour will be led by Amy Elliott Bragg, a writer, historian and director of the Historic Elmwood Foundation at Elmwood Cemetery.
Preregistration is required. This is a free, offsite event.
