The Michigan DMVA resides in the State of Michigan's Executive Branch. The Department Director sits on the Governor's Cabinet and serves as The Adjutant General. U.S. Army Major General Paul D. Rogers is the adjutant general and director of the DMVA.

The Michigan Air National Guard (MIANG) strives to provide ready forces to the president and Governor that mirror and complement our active duty counterparts. Our citizen Airmen are our most treasured resources committed to establishing a diverse, respectful environment and culture that affords all members the opportunity to achieve their military goals. The MIANG views current problems not as unmovable obstacles but rather as opportunities for all levels and ranks of service to work together to achieve success.

The Michigan Army National Guard (MIARNG) is a component of the Michigan’s DMVA team, serving in the State and Governor of Michigan through the Director of the DMVA. The MIARNG provides trained, combat-capable forces in support of the National Military Strategy while simultaneously providing Defense support of Civil Authorities. Providing emergency response to the State is a core function of the MIARNG and the department as a whole.

The Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency (MVAA) is the central coordinating agency, providing support, care, advocacy and service to veterans and their families.  The agency works to identify and break down barriers veterans face in employment, education, health care and quality of life, making Michigan a great place for veterans and their families to call home.

Michigan Veteran Homes (MVH) is the entity that provides day-to-day operational oversight of the state’s veteran homes on behalf of the Michigan Veterans Facility Authority (MVFA) and is a branch of the DMVA. MVH strives to ensure that quality long-term care is provided to the veterans and their eligible family members that live within the Homes. High quality care for this phase of life is central to the “member for life” concept that DMVA embraces. The MVH operates the Michigan Veteran Homes at Grand Rapids (MVHGR), the Michigan Veteran Homes D.J. Jacobetti (MVHDJJ) in Marquette and the new Michigan Veteran Homes at Chesterfield Township (MVHCT).

The Michigan Youth Challenge Academy educates, trains and mentors at-risk youth in a quasi-military environment at no cost to participants, giving young people the skills to become productive and responsible citizens. Applying the military model to alternative education, the Academy promotes competency development through academic opportunities, life skills and vocational preparation.

The Legislative Engagement team coordinates, plans and manages legislative activities impacting the DMVA and the Michigan National Guard. The team researches proposed legislation, works with legislators to develop bills and may garner support for the legislation. Duties include tracking the progress of proposed and pending legislation and briefing the adjutant general on legislative progress.

State Operations is responsible for a broad range of services, including accounting, departmental procurement, contracting, lease management, financial analysis, business planning, data governance, data collection, executive budget management, management level reporting, legislative reporting and management of special programs such as the Michigan Family Relief Fund, the State Tuition Assistance Program and the Michigan Youth Challenge Academy.

The Strategic Communications team provides communication services to the adjutant general and director of the DMVA. These services include media outreach, community relations, intergovernmental relations and keeping internal and external publics informed on issues that may affect them.
