The American copper butterfly (Lycaena phlaeas) has orange forewings with black spots and brown hindwings fringed with orange. The boxelder bug (Boisea trivittata) is common in Michigan in the summer. Early life stages have a red, elongated body, and adults are black with orange lines. The brown marmorated stink bug nymph is very similar in size, shape and color to the early stage spotted lanternfly nymph. Small spikes on the sides of the stink bug nymph's body, visible antennae, and the presence of white bands, rather than white spots, on its legs may help to differentiate the two. Ilia underwing (Catocala ilia) is a moth with red to orange underwings somewhat similar to those of adult spotted lanternfly. Ilia underwing's upper wings are a mottled camouflage that helps it blend in to tree bark. The white-lined sphinx (Hyles lineata) is a large hawk moth. The pink stripe on it's underwings may be mistaken for the red underwings of the spotted lanternfly. Note the brown upper wings with a tan stripe and characteristic white lines of this sphinx moth, in contrast with the gray wings with black spots found on the spotted lanternfly.
