Invasive Species: Laws
Invasive Species Laws
Laws and regulations at the state and federal level are designed to stop the introduction and spread of invasive species. These laws are often complicated. Following a few best practices can keep you on the right side of the law.
Plant Pest Quarantines
Bait and fish release laws
Dispose of bait on land or in the trash to stop the spread of invasive species and fish diseases.
Boating Laws - stop aquatic hitchhikers!
Michigan law requires that after trailering boats, and before getting on the road, boaters must pull plugs, drain water and remove plants and debris.
Don't buy, sell, keep or move invasive species
Many invasive species are prohibited or restricted by state or federal laws.
Don't move firewood
Invasive insects and diseases have killed millions of our trees, often after hitching a ride on firewood. Help protect our parks by using certified heat-treated firewood sold in parks, local stores and roadside stands.
Spongy moth federal quarantine
DON'T MAKE A MOVE until you check for spongy moth (Lymantria dispar, formerly known as gypsy moth). Anyone moving out of state must comply with this federal quarantine regulation.
Registration to sell aquatic organisms
State law requires anyone selling live, non-native aquatic organisms in Michigan to annually register and report to the Department of Natural Resources.
Ships - ballast water management practices
It is a goal of this state to prevent the introduction of and minimize the spread of aquatic nuisance species within the Great Lakes. Learn about ballast water control port operations and ballast water discharge-related information.
State laws and regulations
Michigan's Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Act - NREPA (451 of 1994, as amended) defines prohibited and restricted species in Michigan, limits their possession, import or sale, and defines permitted actions and procedures for the treatment of aquatic nuisance species.
Federal laws and regulations
A number of federal laws regulate the movement of invasive species into or throughout the United States and its waters.
