Apply now for Clean Boats Clean Waters grants

If your organization is helping to prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species, we have a grant opportunity for you! Michigan Clean Boats, Clean Waters grants supply up to $3,000 to organizations communicating aquatic invasive species prevention information through outreach materials and in-person educational events aimed at the boating and angling community.

The application period is open now through Jan. 31, 2027, for this unique grant opportunity, with $35,000 available for this grant cycle.

Who should apply?

This program is for organizations dedicated to protecting Michigan’s waters from aquatic invasive species and conducting outreach and education to boaters. Eligible applicants include lake associations, watershed groups, local or tribal units of government, schools, nature centers, and non-profit organizations. Cooperative invasive species management areas and organizations with a statewide impact are highly encouraged to support local groups in their area.

What projects are eligible?

Grant projects should be focused on the outreach and prevention pathways for aquatic invasive species. Funds can be used for a variety of activities, including printing and installing signage, invasive species removal tools, educational swag or handouts, or materials for educational booths or presentations.

Ineligible projects may include, but are not limited to, invasive species eradication costs, the partial purchase or maintenance of a mechanical boat washing station (i.e., boat cleaning systems using high-pressure water, waterless decontamination systems) and indirect costs and fringe for staffing. We encourage applicants to reach out to program staff about project eligibility prior to submitting their application.

Funding requests can be up to $3,000 and do not require a local match or cost-sharing.

This is a competitive funding opportunity, and complete applications will be subject to a review process and ranked based on group eligibility, project significance, anticipated outcomes, and target audiences. Applications will be accepted until January 31st, 2027.
