MDCR investigates complaints to determine whether unlawful discrimination has occurred. While investigating a complaint, MDCR is impartial and does not act as an advocate or representative for either party.
The Managing Attorney and MDCR staff attorneys serve as legal advisors to all MDCR organizational units.

The Equity Office remains actively engaged in the work of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) with state agencies, local government, communities, and organizations across the state. The Equity Office continues to develop internal/external initiatives to honor and celebrate diversity across the state, and in the month of June the Equity Office will expand its LGBTQ educational outreach efforts under the guidance of Cynthia Thornton - Equity Technician/LGBTQ liaison. The Office continues to play an integral part in the COVID-19 Task Force on Racial Disparities, and works closely with the Equity and Inclusion Officer (EIO) in the Executive Office, and EIO's throughout the state, to improve state departments' DEI infrastructures. The Equity Office will be hosting its next Council for Government and Education on Equity and Inclusion meeting on June 11 to continue the work of operationalizing several of the recommendations in MCRC's Education Equity Report.
