Polymarket backs down as Michigan's relentless crackdown on unlicensed sports betting continues
October 28, 2026
DETROIT, Oct. 28, 2026 — The Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) announced today that QCX LLC, doing business as Polymarket US, has agreed to stop offering new sports-related event contracts to Michigan customers, and to close out any remaining open customer positions by the end of the day Eastern time on November 25, 2026.
The agreement, negotiated between the state and Polymarket US, is the latest in a series of actions Michigan has taken this year against unlicensed operators offering sports wagering products disguised as federally regulated “prediction markets.” It follows similar agreements recently reached with Coinbase Financial Markets, Inc. and Robinhood Derivatives, LLC, as well as a state-court preliminary injunction obtained against KalshiEX LLC.
“Polymarket joining Kalshi, Robinhood, and Coinbase in stepping back from these unlicensed sports contracts shows that Michigan’s approach is working,” said MGCB Executive Director Henry Williams. “We expect all operators to respect Michigan’s regulatory framework. If you want to offer sports wagering to Michigan residents, you need a Michigan license.”
Under the terms of the stipulation, approved by the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Michigan, Polymarket US will cease offering new sports-related event contracts in Michigan and will close any open contracts held by Michigan residents that customers have not closed out voluntarily by the November 25 deadline. In exchange, the state has agreed not to take enforcement action against Polymarket US so long as the company remains in compliance.
Polymarket US sued state officials in federal court in March 2026, seeking to block Michigan from enforcing its gaming laws. The court denied Polymarket’s request for a temporary restraining order in March and its motion for a preliminary injunction in June 2026. Polymarket’s appeal of that ruling is pending before the Sixth Circuit. On Sept. 10, the Michigan Department of Attorney General notified Polymarket US that it would take legal action if the company did not cease offering sports-related event contracts to Michigan residents.
“One by one, from Kalshi to Robinhood and Coinbase, and this latest agreement with Polymarket, we’re holding the national sports betting industry accountable to Michigan law,” said Attorney General Dana Nessel. “Alongside the MGCB, we’re protecting Michigan residents by ensuring gaming in our state occurs in licensed and regulated ways, and under the protections and safeguards afforded by the law.”
Michigan has now secured agreements or court orders halting sports-related event contracts from Kalshi, Robinhood, Coinbase, and Polymarket. The Attorney General’s office and the Michigan Gaming Control Board continue their joint, relentless efforts to ensure that sports wagering in Michigan is offered only through properly licensed and regulated operators.
