State Police Accepting Applications from Licensed Police Officers
October 29, 2025
The Michigan State Police (MSP) is now accepting applications from licensed law enforcement officers to join the 151st Trooper Recruit School, which is anticipated to begin in July 2026.
The 12-week lateral entry recruit school, which is shorter than a traditional 20 - 22-week recruit school, recognizes the experience and value that prior law enforcement service brings to an agency and offers applicants an accelerated training opportunity that rewards their experience. The school will run in tandem with the upcoming 152nd Trooper Recruit School, with lateral applicants graduating early.
“Modernizing our recruiting and training processes continues to be a priority for us,” stated Col. James F. Grady II, director of the MSP. “Our troopers and sergeants just received a significant 20% pay increase, which is in addition to the competitive benefits package and promotional opportunities available to our troopers, making a career as a State Trooper more attractive than ever.”
To be eligible, applicants must have at least two years of continuous experience as a Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) licensed officer in good standing or obtain the MCOLES Recognition of Prior Training and Experience if they are an out-of-state police officer.
