Why Become a Trooper?

State troopers have statewide jurisdiction and recruits get to choose their top three post locations.

MSP provides ongoing top-notch training and equipment, and troopers regularly conduct their own investigations with support from MSP’s numerous resources. There's ample opportunity for career advancement and many different career paths to follow.

*After six years. Does not include overtime or shift premiums.

Trooper Recruit School

All troopers complete our residential training academy in Lansing, Michigan where they receive nearly 1,200 hours of hands-on, lecture, and scenario-based instruction.

Recruits receive:

  • Post assignment prior to the start of recruit school
  • Paid training during recruit school
  • Insurance and benefits

Career Paths

There are several career paths available to troopers. After successful completion of the probationary period and two years of service, troopers are eligible to apply for specialty assignments including:

  • Canine Unit
  • Computer Crimes
  • Detective
  • and many more.

Motor Carrier Officer (MCO)

Motor carrier officers are armed members of the Michigan State Police responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. Motor carrier officers enforce traffic safety laws on commercial vehicles, protect the infrastructure through size and weight enforcement, and conduct inspections.

State Properties Security Officer (SPSO)

All SPSO positions are based in the Lansing area. SPSO's perform a number of law enforcement functions while on duty including patrol of the Capitol Grounds and state office buildings, security at special events, dignitary protection, and investigation of criminal complaints.
