Outdoor Adventure Center - Senior Stroll: Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory and Dossin Great Lakes Museum
Join a naturalist for a casual stroll through one of our state parks or local historic areas. Each month we’ll focus on a topic related to natural or cultural history. Wear your walking shoes and dress for the weather – we’ll go out rain, snow, or shine! Meet at the designated location. Maps will be provided upon registration. Trail conditions vary – see descriptions.
In November, join us for a morning exploring two of Belle Isle's gems – the Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory and Dossin Great Lakes Museum.
Whether by birch bark canoe, sailing ship, steamboat, hydroplane or giant freighter, Detroiters have used the Great Lakes to build their city, their fortunes and their lives. Through a maritime tour of the Dossin Great Lakes Museum, guests will discover Detroit’s connection to the Great Lakes from the earliest Anishinaabek, and later French, settlements in the region to the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald.
A short drive or walk away, the Anna Scrips Whitcomb Conservatory features an indoor display of plants from around the world. In addition to unique horticultural collections, the building itself is a draw for architecture and history buffs, as it was designed by Albert Kahn, one of Detroit’s most celebrated architects. Once the tour is completed, you are welcome to continue to wander this botanical haven.
A Recreation Passport is required to enter Belle Isle Park.
Preregistration is required. Cost is $12 per person.
