Join a naturalist for a casual stroll through one of our state parks or local historic areas. Each month, we’ll focus on a topic related to natural or cultural history. Wear your walking shoes and dress for the weather – we’ll go out rain, snow or shine! Meet at the designated location. Trail conditions vary – see descriptions.
The site of
Historic Fort Wayne has a history deeply entangled with Detroit and the surrounding communities. Over the past thousand years, this area has been a Potawatomi village and sacred burial ground, a colonial trading site, a diplomatic meeting ground, a station on the Underground Railroad, and an important military logistics center. Today, it is a park nestled along the Detroit River and an important historical and cultural heritage site.
The tour will start at the visitor parking lot. We’ll walk mostly on paved surfaces for about ½ mile. We will be in and out of some interior spaces, with a bathroom stop available halfway through. An optional view over the fort perimeter entails a relatively steep climb on uneven ground. After the tour is completed, you are welcome to stay and explore the grounds.
