The Michigan Department of Corrections is one of the principal state departments. Final responsibility for the operation of the department rests with the Governor who appoints the Director, with the advice and consent of the state Senate. The Director serves at the pleasure of the Governor. The Director has full power and authority in the supervision and control of the department's affairs and is its chief administrative officer.

The Correctional Facilities Administration (CFA) is responsible for the operation of the state's prisons, including the Special Alternative Incarceration Facility (SAI). CFA has administrative offices in Lansing from which the Deputy Director oversees the network of secure facilities. The network consists of two Assistant Deputy Directors who administer an assigned group of wardens. At the local level, the wardens oversee daily operations of the prisons. CFA also manages several peripheral aspects of facility operation, including prisoner transportation and classification.

The Field Operations Administration (FOA) is responsible for state parole and probation supervision as well as other methods of specialized supervision. FOA's parole and probation offices are located in every county in the state. The FOA also employs specialized supervision of offenders including the use of electronic monitoring of offenders in the community, sex offender specific caseloads, quick and decisive responses to technical parole violations in lieu of return to incarceration, and coordinating and overseeing offenders who are supervised under the Interstate Compact Agreement. The Parole Board which is the sole paroling authority for felony offenders committed to the jurisdiction of the Michigan Department of Corrections is also located under FOA.

The Budget and Operations Administration (BOA) is responsible for a variety of employee services and divisions which assist the department. It includes Human Resources, Training, Budget and Projections, Accounting, Procurement and Legal Affairs. It also oversees Research and Planning, Physical Plant, and Michigan State Industries, which makes an assortment of products for prisoners and local governments.

The Michigan Parole Board is working to review cases that can be safely released under current law.  Please do not contact the parole board to ask if your loved one can be considered for parole or early release. The parole board is already reviewing all eligible cases and those receiving parole are being scheduled for parole at the earliest potential date allowed under law.

Any other questions should be directed to one of the three hotline numbers above. Please do not call the parole board directly.

The Parole Board, comprised of 10 members appointed by the Director, is responsible for parole decisions after an offender has served his or her minimum sentence. The Board also makes recommendations to the Governor on requests for commutation and pardon.  The Office of the Parole Board provides administrative and support services to the Board and consists of the Crime Victim Services Section, and the Lifer and Commutation Unit.

The Office of Public Information and Communication provides both internal and external communications for the department. It provides information to the media, the general public and employees, as well as publishes a quarterly newsletter and oversees the department's daily use of social media.

The Legislative Liaison acts as liaison to the Legislature on matters of department policy and procedure and other areas of concern to the Department. A major component to the Legislative Affairs Section is constituent relations.

The Offender Success Administration is responsible for coordinating services provided under the Prisoner Reentry program. The mission of the Prisoner Reentry program is to better prepare prisoners for successful reentry into the community and reduce recidivism. In addition, the Education Services Section provides programming in the areas of Adult Basic Education, General Education Development, Special Education, and offers a variety of vocational programs, including the department's Vocational Villages. The Offender Success Administration also operates the Parole Release Unit.

The Bureau of Health Care Services coordinates and monitors health care services for prisoners and the treatment of seriously mentally ill prisoners via the corrections mental health program.
