After Graduation

On-the-Job Training (OJT) for Corrections Officer Recruits

Once officer recruits have graduated from the Corrections Officer Academy, they will begin a two‑month, paid On‑the‑Job Training (OJT) program at the facility where they have been assigned.

OJT provides officer recruits with the opportunity to gain the knowledge and skills essential to performing the duties of a corrections officer. Recruits receive hands‑on experience and mentorship from experienced correctional employees. During this period, they assume job duties under structured conditions until they demonstrate proficiency.

Successful completion of OJT is required to continue employment with the Michigan Department of Corrections.

After completing OJT, new corrections officers will begin working independently as they complete their first year of probation.
