Dale Harju

Wellness Coordinator

I am sincerely grateful to have been selected to be a member of the MDOC Wellness Unit. I’ve been given the opportunity to contribute to a team that prioritizes health, well-being, and compassionate support. I consider this both an honor and a responsibility I deeply value. The Wellness Unit reflects a shared commitment to fostering positive change and supporting MDOC staff in achieving healthier, more balanced lives. I truly appreciate the trust placed in me, and I am eager to bring dedication, empathy, and professionalism to the work ahead.

I was born in the Copper Country of Upper Michigan, the northernmost region of the UP, and I am a proud “Yooper”. I left the Upper Peninsula at 18 years old, exploring the country on my motorcycle for over a month before finding myself working construction in Pheonix, Arizona. Longing for the woods and lakes of Michigan, I returned and attended Northern Michigan University to earn my bachelor’s degree in psychology and criminal justice. I then completed my clinical graduate degree at Michigan State University. Since then, I’ve worked in a variety of mental health settings in various capacities for decades before finding employment with the MDOC. During my 10 years at the Baraga Correctional Facility, I quickly learned how challenging working in corrections can be, and I developed a deep appreciation for the men and women who are “Committed to protect, Dedicated to success”. The work is stressful, at times unpredictable, and certainly demanding.

I am proud to be a part of the Wellness Unit, a team dedicated solely to supporting MDOC staff, families, and retirees. I look forward to growing within the Wellness Unit and contributing to its continued impact and success.
