FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE                                                               February 4, 2014

Authorities are confirming that Michael David Elliot has been apprehended by Indiana officials and is in custody at the LaPorte County Jail. The extradition process to return Elliot to Michigan will begin immediately.

At approximately 6:30 p.m., Elliot was taken into custody after officers received a report of a stolen vehicle in both Middlebury and LaPorte County, IN. Officers from LaPorte County were able to locate the suspect in a stolen vehicle and a brief vehicle chase ensued, which resulted in Elliot being arrested and taken into custody.

Elliot, who was serving four life sentences for murder, escaped from the Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC) Ionia Correctional Facility during the evening hours of Sunday, February 2, 2014. He carjacked a local woman and drove south. The woman was able to escape and notify law enforcement while the two were stopped at a gas station just south of the Michigan/Indiana state line.

The MDOC and Michigan State Police worked closely with Indiana law enforcement officials and the U.S. Marshals Service to apprehend Elliot.

The investigation is ongoing.
