Newberry Correctional Facility prisoner apprehended following brief escape
A prisoner at the Newberry Correctional Facility is back in custody after a brief early morning escape.
Prisoner Alize Montague, was apprehended by law enforcement shortly after the escape about a mile away from the prison just before 4 a.m. He is now back in the custody of the Michigan Department of Corrections.
Montague, 19, was serving a five to 10-year sentence out of Monroe County. He was incarcerated in January.
The prisoner was observed climbing over the facility's fence just after 2 a.m. and was pursued by corrections officers in a security vehicle who saw the prisoner cross M-123 on foot. The Michigan State Police and the MDOC's Emergency Response Team assisted in the search along with local law enforcement.
Newberry Correctional Facility is a level I security facility, located in the Upper Peninsula in Luce County.
