Lansing, Mich.- Today Governor Gretchen Whitmer issued a proclamation declaring May 2 to May 8, 2021 as Correctional Officer Week in Michigan.
"This week, we recognize the thousands of corrections professionals in Michigan for their work and all that they do to keep inmates safe," Gov. Whitmer said. "Thank you for your professionalism and service to our state."
There are more than 5,100 correctional officers serving in the state of Michigan. These corrections professionals maintain the safety of Michigan correctional facilities and ensure the health and well-being of those incarcerated, while also protecting Michigan communities.
"This week we honor the remarkable men and women who serve the department every day," said Michigan Department of Corrections Director Heidi Washington. "These corrections professionals are dedicated to keeping the public safe and demonstrate professionalism while tending to offenders within our facilities. I thank them for their continued commitment to the department and the state of Michigan."
During the COVID-19 pandemic, correctional officers have put their lives on the frontline, upholding the safety of every Michigander. This week we recognize and thank every corrections professional who serves the state of Michigan for their essential role in protecting the people of Michigan.
