Michigan Department of Corrections Recognized for Fostering Rehabilitative Culture through Data-Driven Supervision
Lansing, MI - The Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC) has been recognized nationally for its commitment to fostering a rehabilitative culture among its staff through the innovative use of data-driven supervision tools. MDOC was honored with the Most Rehabilitative Staff award from Recidiviz, a nonprofit that partners with corrections agencies to use technology and real-time data to improve corrections and reentry outcomes.
The Most Rehabilitative Staff award recognizes MDOC's exceptional efforts in promoting the adoption and effective use of technology to improve outcomes for people under community supervision. Michigan has been a trailblazer in embracing the Recidiviz Supervision Assistant, maximizing the tool's potential to create a more effective and efficient corrections system.
"We're incredibly proud of our staff for their dedication to utilizing data to support positive change," said MDOC Director Heidi E. Washington. "By embracing new technology and fostering a rehabilitative mindset, we're empowering our officers to make more informed decisions and provide the individualized support that leads to successful reentries."
Since 2021, MDOC has partnered with Recidiviz to improve corrections outcomes. The Recidiviz Supervision Assistant provides officers with real-time insights into their caseloads and automates key tasks. This enables a more proactive and effective approach to community supervision, allowing staff to identify people ready for reduced supervision or early discharge, and streamlining the associated paperwork.
"Michigan's commitment to leveraging technology to create a more rehabilitative approach to supervision is truly commendable," said Clementine Jacoby, CEO of Recidiviz. "Their proactive efforts in promoting staff engagement and data-driven decision-making serve as a model for other states."
Recidiviz is a technology non-profit that builds intelligent assistants for corrections staff at every stage of the system, including a Sentencing Assistant, Facilities Assistant, and Supervision Assistant. These tools provide real-time, actionable insights into caseloads and automate key tasks, fostering a proactive approach to reentry that results in better outcomes for individuals and communities alike.
