Prison Drug Smuggling Attempt by Attorney Stopped by Michigan Department of Corrections

St. Louis, MI - Michigan Department of Corrections’ officer and intelligence staff recovered a large amount of contraband after an attorney/client visit at Central Michigan Correctional Facility.

During the visit, which took place on Mon. Aug. 4., the attorney was seen passing a package to their client, who is currently incarcerated at the facility. When the prisoner was subsequently searched, officers discovered 211 strips of paper film suspected to be Suboxone, 68 grams of a brown waxy-substance, and 45 grams of white powder.

“This recovery protected countless individuals from potential illness, overdose, or violence associated with the sale of these drugs or from those under the influence,” said MDOC Director Heidi E. Washington. “I want to especially commend our officers, whose vigilance and dedication were instrumental in this drug bust. We are proud of them and all the staff who worked together not only to make this operation a success, but for the work they do every day to protect those in our custody, their colleagues, and the people of Michigan.”

Michigan State Police were called onsite after the discovery for further investigation. A search of the attorney’s car revealed additional Suboxone strips and white powder. The attorney continues to be under investigation by Michigan State Police and the prisoner is currently undergoing discipline and investigation according to MDOC department policy.

"As the nature of contraband continues to evolve, the department continues to implement effective strategies to deter and halt such illegal activities," said Correctional Facility Administration Deputy Director, Jeremy Bush. “The recent introduction of new technologies and policies will further our fight against these crimes and help save lives.”

The Michigan Department of Corrections continues to take significant strides to reduce contraband. Implementation of new technologies such as body scanners, package scanners, and legal mail verification are helping to deter smuggling attempts. In addition, improved search procedures, officer training, and investment in intelligence activities are helping to address security risks.

This case is still under investigation and as a matter of safety and security, the department will not be releasing names of the suspects at this time.
