MDOC has been implementing a variety of tactics to improve recruitment and retention of new and current officers.

New Recruitment Manager

The department recently hired a new recruitment manager who brings a distinctive blend of experience shaped by 16 years in  recruiting, supporting organizations like Ford Motor Company,  Google, and American Rheinmetall. 

New Recruitment Advertising Tactics
Updated marketing strategy has gathered nearly 6,000 unique  leads and implemented new ads on Spotify, YouTube, and streaming services like Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN. Along with other platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Google Search, local  TV/radio, and print that have historically shown strong  engagement. 

Target Healthcare Advertising
Developed specific advertisements to target health care staff in areas across the state.

Direct Mail Pilot
Kinross and Chippewa Correctional Facilities are piloting direct mail based on demographics.

Pay Increase for U.P. Recruits
The department is implementing an increased pay rate for new corrections officer recruits at several Upper Peninsula correctional  facilities. The pay rate increases annual base earnings of a corrections officer there by approximately $10,000.

Jackson Recruit Allocation Pilot
Pilot assigns all Jackson area recruits to the facility that has the current lowest staffing level. The previous two classes have assigned recruits to  RGC and JCF. The RGC vacancy rate went from 32.5% to 22% and the JCF vacancy rate went from 37.4% to 28.4%.

Youth Career Academy
This month we are hosting the first MDOC Career Academy at Green  Oaks Training and Professional Development Center. This free opportunity allows 15- to 20-year-olds interested in a career in corrections to explore available opportunities while participating in  hands-on activities with experienced professionals
