Traverse City resident selected for Department of Military and Veterans Affairs senior deputy director

January 11, 2011

LANSING, MICH. - Former Sen. Jason Allen will serve as senior deputy director for veterans affairs in the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs.

Allen served in the Michigan Army National Guard from 1990 to 1996.

"Senator Allen has worked for years to assist our veterans and make sure they are able to access the services and benefits they earned in service to this country," Gov. Rick Snyder said. "In this new role, he will continue to make sure our veterans are taken care of, especially those who are coming back from the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq."

As chair of the Senate Seniors and Veterans Affairs Committee, Allen worked to modernize laws assisting veterans. He also sponsored legislation requiring pre- and post-deployment psychiatric evaluations in order to monitor members of the military for traumatic brain injuries, stress and depression so those who need it can receive treatment.

Allen has also successfully pushed through legislation intended to help those deploying for war, such as laws that allow active duty members of the military to cancel cell phone contracts and arrange payment for storage lockers. Allen also authored legislation for the Purple Heart Monument on the grounds of the State Capitol complex.

Prior to his legislative career, Allen managed his family's men's clothing store in Traverse City and served on the Grand Traverse County Board of commissioners for eight years, where he served on the Veterans Trust Fund Board. Allen has a Bachelor of Science in Finance from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.

Allen has been married to Susan (Miller) for fifteen years. They have two children; Amanda and Meredith. His parents, Maurie and Betsy, reside in Traverse City as well.
