MDCR Director John E. Johnson, Jr. Applauds Congress, President Biden for Passing and Signing into Law the Emmett Till Antilynching Act

Lansing, MI—John. E. Johnson, Jr., Executive Director of the Michigan Department of Civil Rights, has issued a statement on the passage and signing into law of federal hate crime legislation, the Emmett Till Antilynching Act.

"We applaud Congress for passing, and President Biden for signing, the Emmett Till Antilynching Act. The Act is named for the 14-year-old Black teenager who was brutally murdered in 1955 after being falsely accused of menacing a White woman. His killing shocked the nation and helped catalyze the civil rights movement."

"Last week, MDCR hosted a forum with Rev. Wheeler Parker, Emmett Till’s cousin and the last surviving witness to his abduction, for a discussion about the impact of hate and violence. He told us of that awful night and his realization, as a group of White men pulled Emmett from his bed, that there was no where to go and no one to turn to for help. Sixty-seven years later, the lynching and torture to which Mr. Till was subjected, along with thousands more People of Color over the centuries – including the more recent acts of violence that have taken the lives of other Black men, such as Ahmaud Arbery - are now hate crimes under federal law. Finally."
