MDCR Director John E. Johnson, Jr. on Confirmation of Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson to the U.S. Supreme Court
Lansing, MI—John. E. Johnson, Jr., Executive Director of the Michigan Department of Civil Rights, has issued the following statement on today's confirmation of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the U.S. Supreme Court.
"As our nation and world stand reeling from current events, the confirmation of Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson to the U.S. Supreme Court provides a powerful beacon of hope. With today’s vote, we are one step closer to a court that more closely reflects the nation over which it presides. As the first Black woman and the first public defender to serve on the court, Justice Jackson brings a rich, nuanced and invaluable perspective on the implications and impact of the court’s decisions on the lived experience of real people and their families.
As an attorney, I am also happy that Justice Jackson has directly experienced serving the legally disenfranchised. Her time as a public defender and with the United States Sentencing Commission gives me confidence that she is prepared to make decisions that consider the interests of those whose rights are at risk.
We extend our hearty congratulations to Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson and look forward to her service on the nation’s highest court."
The Michigan Department of Civil Rights is charged with investigating and resolving complaints of discrimination and working to prevent discrimination through educational programs that promote voluntary compliance with civil rights laws. The Department also provides training and services to government agencies, businesses, schools and organizations on diversity initiatives, fair housing and equal employment law.
