Michigan Department of Civil Rights Issues Statement on the Passing of Judy Heumann

LANSING, MI—John E. Johnson, Jr., Executive Director of the Michigan Department of Civil Rights, has issued the following statement on the passing of Judy Heumann, an internationally recognized leader in disability rights. 

“We mourn the passing and celebrate the extraordinary life and legacy of Judy Heumann. Her courage and dedication resulted in dramatic changes to the landscape of disability rights and opened the door of integration and access which was previously closed to many people with disabilities. Ms. Heumann was a visionary leader whose courage and sustaining passion empowers all those who continue to work toward true equity and full access for all persons with disabilities."

The Michigan Department of Civil Rights is charged with investigating and resolving discrimination complaints and works to prevent discrimination through educational programs that promote voluntary compliance with civil rights laws. The Department also provides information and services to businesses on diversity initiatives and equal employment law.
