State of Michigan Internships

Intern with the State of Michigan

State of Michigan internships create an ongoing partnership between students, academic institutions, and the State of Michigan, connecting agencies with talented students. Internships are available across 19 different State of Michigan departments, where students gain practical, real world experience, networking opportunities, and a competitive edge for employment opportunities with the State of Michigan.

To find and apply to internship openings, visit our jobs website, and to learn more, view our short State of Michigan Internship Program video.

Interns are invited to share fresh perspectives, creativity, and utilize innovative technologies to help Michigan maintain its place as a leader in state government. In addition to providing an effective way for students to gain experience in their chosen career paths, the State of Michigan Internship program also satisfies credit requirements at hundreds of colleges and universities, with all majors and fields of study accepted.

Students must be enrolled in at least one college or university level course during the internship semester. Internship semester periods generally fall during the following timeframes:

Fall: September–December
Winter/Spring: January–April
Summer: May–August

Internship opportunities are posted by each participating department and indicate whether the internship is paid or unpaid. Applicants must apply individually to each internship; every opening is specific to the agency, giving students valuable career-specific experiences.

Former State of Michigan Intern Testimonials:

April M.
“My internship, as a whole, was amazing. I enjoyed every part of it. I absolutely believe my internship experience as being valuable in deciding my career path. I knew before doing my internship that I wanted to do probation but was not sure if I wanted to work with adults or juveniles. Completing the internship helped me in making this decision. Without the internship, I think it would have been harder to make that decision.”

Kristin P.
“The internships allow students to gain real world experience before choosing their career paths. Internships are an invaluable learning experience for students. It gives them a real-world look at the career they are aspiring to attain. For some, this solidifies the career they are pursuing is the right one for them. This is of course a very valuable experience for university programs to be able to offer to their students as a part of their curriculum.”

Kellie F.
“I had the privilege to see the level of professionalism required when working with mandated populations. This includes tough conversations with defendants. Despite being difficult, these conversations allowed the agents to gain insight into the probationer’s perspective and assist in problem-solving for a more pro-social outcome. Although the decision to follow instructions/orders is ultimately the defendant’s obligation, the insight displayed by the agents illuminated the hardships our defendant’s face daily. However, walking someone through their mistakes with concern can restore motivation and resilience. These invaluable lessons will sustain my career and further reflects how I interact with each person daily.”
