OK2SAY School Implementation Guide

What is OK2SAY?

OK2SAY is a student safety program that allows students to confidentially report tips on potential harm or criminal activities directed at students, school employees, and schools. The program is available statewide for public and nonpublic schools in Michigan. OK2SAY focuses on early intervention and prevention through awareness and education.

Methods of reporting a confidential tip:

How is confidentiality protected?

The Michigan Student Safety Act 401 of 2020 protects the identity of the person submitting the tip unless permission is granted by the tipster, by the tipster’s parents (if they are a minor), or through a court order.

Step 1 - Register contact information required by law

Every public and nonpublic school are required by law to provide Michigan State Police (MSP) at least one school official's emergency contact information twice a year. Visit www.mi.gov/ok2saycontact to register school contacts today. The emergency after-hours contact information is kept confidential and accessed only if there is an after-hours emergency involving imminent danger to the safety or well-being of a student.

Step 2 - Schedule a free student safety presentation for your school

We offer customized age-appropriate programming designed to protect children throughout the state.  Presentations may be in-person or online depending upon the availability of the team.

Step 3 - Add the OK2SAY technician desk phone numbers to your mobile phone

If designated as an OK2SAY Emergency Contact, please save the OK2SAY Technician Desk contact to your phone. If you receive a call from OK2SAY (517-284-3020) and need to make a return call, reach out to OK2SAY: 517-284-3137.

Step 4 - Ensure OK2SAY Communications Are Whitelisted

Review network and firewall settings to ensure OK2SAY communications are not blocked. Schools should whitelist the following email addresses and domains — ok2say@mi.gov and ok2say@michigan.gov — to enable two-way communication between students and OK2SAY technicians. Proper configuration supports continued dialogue during active tips and allows school administrators to receive more complete information when incidents are referred for follow-up.

Step 5 - Help promote and advertise OK2SAY in the school

OK2SAY provides a comprehensive library of free digital promotional materials designed to help Michigan schools easily raise awareness of confidential student safety reporting and reinforce a culture of prevention throughout their school community. These ready-to-use resources allow districts to integrate student safety messaging into existing communication channels without requiring additional design or development work.

The digital promotional materials are intended to support schools in making OK2SAY visible, accessible, and consistently reinforced across both physical and virtual learning environments. Schools can incorporate these assets into websites, digital signage systems, social media platforms, newsletters, classroom displays, and other communication tools to ensure students and families understand how to seek help or report concerns confidentially.

Step 6 - Complete an Outcome Report for each tip your school receives

Outcome Reports provide your school with an opportunity to take ownership of student safety threats and provide program feedback. A copy of the report will be automatically forwarded to the individual who completed the Outcome Report.

Additional strategies and best practices to introduce and reinforce OK2SAY

  • Treat an OK2SAY tip like any other source of information. Take it seriously and investigate the matter efficiently, fairly, and transparently.
  • Have procedures in place for routinely handling OK2SAY tips. Make sure it is clear to your staff which individuals are responsible for receiving, investigating, and completing the OK2SAY Outcome Report.
  • Utilize a multidisciplinary behavior threat assessment team in cases that elicit concern for the safety of students.
  • It is advisable not to disclose that information was obtained through an OK2SAY tip, as doing so may shift the focus away from addressing the concern and toward requests for access to the report.
  • Make sure all staff members working with students are knowledgeable about OK2SAY, why it is significant, and how it functions. This not only educates staff on addressing the code of silence among students but also enables them to emphasize the importance of reporting incidents in a manner that ensures safety.
  • Educate the community about OK2SAY through parent newsletters and other electronic communications.

Additional Student Promotion Ideas

  • Introduce OK2SAY during student orientations to ensure new students understand how and when to use the program.
  • Display OK2SAY promotional materials, including posters and stickers, in high-traffic areas throughout the school. School staff, particularly counselors, should maintain a supply of OK2SAY contact cards and brochures for distribution.
  • Incorporate OK2SAY messaging into school announcements (morning or video announcements) on a recurring basis.
  • Add OK2SAY information to learning management systems (e.g., Canvas, Schoology, Google Classroom) for easy student access.
  • Display OK2SAY information on classroom smart boards or rotating digital slides before or after class periods.
  • Partner with student leadership groups (student council, peer mentors, safety teams) to help reinforce awareness messaging.
  • Include OK2SAY information in mental health awareness activities and wellness initiatives.
  • Feature OK2SAY during national awareness observances, such as Bullying Prevention Month or Suicide Prevention Awareness Month.
  • Add OK2SAY information to athletic program materials and event signage to reach students outside the classroom environment.
  • Share OK2SAY reminders before extended breaks (holiday, spring, or summer breaks) when students may need additional support resources.
  • Incorporate OK2SAY information into substitute teacher plans or classroom resource folders so information remains visible year-round.
  • Encourage staff to reference OK2SAY as a support resource when discussing school safety, reporting concerns, or helping peers.
  • Download the OK2SAY mobile app to your device to demonstrate its features and reporting process to students.
  • Include OK2SAY contact information on the back of student identification cards.
  • Add the OK2SAY logo to your school’s website to promote program awareness.
  • Create a shortcut to the OK2SAY website on shared school computers to provide quick access to reporting resources.
  • Include an OK2SAY reminder in the school handbook for students and parents.
  • Place OK2SAY reusable stickers on school buses to increase program visibility.
  • Post OK2SAY resource materials in classrooms, restrooms, and locker rooms to increase awareness and accessibility.
