This site is the location of previous engine component manufacturing and plating operations. Groundwater was sampled for PFAS due to a historic release (before 2011) of plating fluids from the plating line formerly on the property.
- In December 2019, MAHLE drilled and sampled three Vertical Aquifer Profile borings in order to continue the delineation of the downgradient groundwater contaminant plume. Official results from this work are still pending.
- MAHLE will be analyzing the results of the December 2019 work. The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) will continue to provide regulatory oversight.

- Properties in the immediate area of the MAHLE site are serviced by municipal water from the city of Muskegon.

- MAHLE has notified down-gradient properties and is confirming that no drinking water wells are located down-gradient.

MAHLE Engine Components, USA, Inc. – Former Harvey Street Muskegon Plant is located at 2051 South Harvey Street in Muskegon. The main activity at this plant was the production of engine parts, which included plating. There was a historic release of PFAS prior to 2011 from former plating operations to the groundwater.
A wetland associated with Little Black Creek and Barney Creek is approximately 750 feet down-gradient of the closest impacted groundwater monitoring well. MAHLE is developing a plan to sample the stream water and groundwater flowing into the stream.
- In September 2018, MAHLE sampled 7 groundwater monitoring wells located on the former MAHLE Harvey Street Muskegon Plant property. The highest result was 946.75 ppt PFOS+PFOA and 4,737.8 ppt Total Tested PFAS.
- On October 22, 2018, MAHLE sent Notices of Migration to down-gradient property owners to notify them of contamination moving off-site. Public Health Muskegon Count was also sent copies of the Notices of Migration. The Notices contained a data map with PFOA concentrations depicted and groundwater flow direction information.
- In November 2018, MAHLE sampled 11 groundwater monitoring wells located on the southern portion of the MAHLE Harvey Street Muskegon Plant property and on the adjacent property to the south.
- On January 14, 2019, the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) received the results from the November 2018 groundwater sampling. The highest result was 746.2 ppt PFOS+PFOA and 73,121.4 ppt Total Tested PFAS.
- On January 23, 2019, MAHLE sent an additional Notice of Migration to an additional property owner.
- On February 7, 2019, EGLE met with MAHLE to discuss the next steps for delineating the contamination.
- In March 2019, MAHLE completed an additional PFAS sampling event of existing monitoring wells. Results are similar to the previous two sample events. MAHLE has confirmed that nearby properties are serviced by municipal water. MAHLE also conducted a drive-by survey to confirm that wells are not located in the area.
- On May 9, 2019, EGLE received the March 2019 groundwater sampling results.
- In May 2019, MAHLE sampled surface water and groundwater in streambeds to evaluate if contaminated groundwater is venting to downgradient streams.
- On July 12, 2019, EGLE received the results from MAHLE’s May surface water sampling. No exceedances of Rule 57 surface water quality values were detected in these samples.
