The Annis Water Resources Institute is hosting a presentation and Q&A session on PFAS. This event will cover the scientific and policy aspects of PFAS and provide updates on contamination sites in Muskegon County. Dr. Richard will lead the presentation and Q&A, joined by a representative from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.

PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are a large group of human-made chemicals that have been used since the 1940s in products such as nonstick cookware, stain-resistant fabrics, firefighting foam, and food packaging. Known as “forever chemicals,” PFAS do not break down easily in the environment or in our bodies.

Studies have found that PFAS exposure can increase the risk of cancer, damage the liver and immune system, and interfere with child development. Because these chemicals can travel through air, water, and food, nearly all of us have detectable levels of PFAS in our blood.

In Michigan, PFAS contamination has affected drinking water, rivers, and lakes and is impacting communities, wildlife, and local economies. Both state and federal agencies are now enforcing stricter limits on PFAS in water, but cleanup efforts remain complex and expensive. Public awareness is increasing, safer alternatives are being developed, and communities are working together to advocate for stronger protections. The presentation will cover the history of PFAS, their toxicity, and how universities can play an important role in community engagement.
