There are two major classes of firefighting foam: Class A and Class B. Class B is also called Aqueous film forming foam (AFFF) and is usually created using PFAS. It is a highly effective foam used for fighting high-hazard flammable liquid fires, like gasoline, oil, and jet fuel.

Hydro Extrusion USA, LLC (Hydro) operated an aluminum extrusion facility located at 5575 North Riverview Drive, Kalamazoo, Michigan (the property) until March 2020, when operations at the facility ceased. To facilitate site closure, Hydro retained AECOM Technical Services (AECOM) to review and evaluate environmental conditions at the property. Environmental assessment activities completed between 2017 to present included groundwater sampling for PFAS.
The direction of groundwater flow is to the west. Russell Creek runs through the western parcel and the Kalamazoo River is located approximately 3,100 feet west of the site.

This Site is located within the Crown Vantage Property MPART Site. The initial work conducted for the Crown Vantage Property Site included the sampling of residential wells near and around this Site, Hydro Extrusion USA. There were some detections of PFAS in some of the nearby residential wells. Residents were provided with an alternate drinking water source and, according to the City of Kalamazoo, will be connected to municipal water by the end of 2022.
Hydro Extrusion USA will continue their investigation. The City of Kalamazoo will continue the expansion of the municipal water supply planned to be completed prior to the end of 2022.
