Background

Adrian Landfill Incorporated is located at 1970 Ogden Highway and operated by Republic Services Incorporated.  The Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy requested the site sample for PFAS due to the potential of groundwater contamination from the site and the proximity of potential drinking water receptors.  The highest groundwater PFOS+PFOA result in monitoring wells was 85.7 ppt.

This facility is adjacent to the River Raisin, which is a major surface water feature and used for drinking water and irrigation.  As part of the statewide public water supply sampling EGLE conducted in 2019, the River Raisin was sampled monthly from May through October; additional samples were also taken in 2019.  Results are available on the MPART web site. Groundwater flow direction is east-southeast; nearby surface water flow in the River Raisin is to the south-southeast.  Groundwater from the site discharges to the River Raisin, as does the treated groundwater from the pumping and treatment system.

Adrian Landfill Groundwater Monitoring Sample Locations

Recent Accomplishments

  • On August 1, 2019, Lakeshore Environmental Inc., on behalf of Republic Services, collected groundwater samples from seven on-site monitoring wells.
  • On September 12, 2019, Republic Services contacted EGLE with groundwater sample results and indicated that one sample exceeded Part 201 drinking water criteria with a result of 74.9 ppt PFOS+PFAS.  EGLE approved Republic Services to collect a confirmation sample to verify the result since the result was very close to the criteria value.
  • On October 4, 2019, Lakeshore Environmental collected two groundwater confirmation samples from on-site monitoring wells, MW-1 and MW-25.  Monitoring well MW-1 and MW-25 are in a downgradient location of the landfill, near the east-southeast corner.
  • On October 25, 2019, EGLE received the groundwater sample results.  The highest groundwater PFOS+PFOA result was 85.7 ppt from monitoring well MW-1.  PFAS was detected in monitoring well MW-25 but below Part 201 criteria.
  • On February 14, 2020, an effluent sample from the purge and treatment system (which is discharged to the River Raisin) was sampled.  The result was 34.9 ppt PFOS + PFOA, below the Part 201 criteria.

Next Steps

  • Rjavascript:void(0);epublic Services will submit a plan to monitor PFAS along with the current monitoring activities.

Residential Well Testing/Alternate Water Information

  • No residential well testing is planned as determined from a review of the PFAS results.  PFAS is contained onsite with a pumping and treatment system that discharges the treated groundwater to the River Raisin.

Upcoming Community Engagement
