Background
Quality Plating Company, Inc (Quality Plating), located at 2712 McIlwraith, is a metal plating facility. Samples of storm water collected by Quality Plating as part of the Short-Term Storm Water Characterization Study for detected PFOS at concentrations up to 20,373 ppt. This storm water came from an outfall that collects roof drainage water which is discharged to a vegetated area next to the building, which is infiltrating to the ground.
EGLE requested that Quality Plating sample groundwater at the facility for PFAS. Quality Plating sampled groundwater, the highest of which was 356 ppt PFOS (compared to 16 ppt).
In the spring of 2023, EGLE sent Quality Plating letters stating regulatory obligations to address contamination at this site.
Groundwater in the area is expected to flow generally to the southeast toward Little Black Creek. PFOS has been detected at concentrations of up to 15.7 ppt (compared to 12 ppt) in surface water samples collected from Little Black Creek near Quality Plating.
