Background
During routine compliance monitoring, one business located near US 131 and Mackinaw Trail in Clam Lake Township began to show elevated levels of PFAS in their drinking water. As of December 2024, this business exceeded Michigan drinking water criteria with a running annual average of 17 ppt PFOS (compared to 16 ppt). There is another business in the area that has also shown elevated levels of PFAS but has not exceeded the running annual average criteria. Because no clear source(s) could be identified, an investigation of the surrounding area began.
There are several aquifers in the area, and groundwater flow direction varies greatly depending on the aquifer. Lake Cadillac is located roughly one mile to the northwest.

Drinking water information
EGLE, DHHS, and local health have evaluated nearby drinking water wells and have developed a sampling plan involving approximately 30 drinking water wells. Sampling is planned to begin in early 2025.
Anticipated activities
Because no drinking water wells had detections above current PFAS criteria, no additional sampling is planned at this time and no additional wells have been identified for further evaluation in relation to the potential source area.
