Statement on Trump Administration's Partisan Nursing Home Letter
LANSING – Governor Gretchen Whitmer's Press Secretary Tiffany Brown issued the following statement commenting on a letter mailed to four Democratic governors by President Trump's Department of Justice:
"Protecting the health, safety, and wellbeing of our seniors and most vulnerable residents has been a top priority throughout this crisis. The fact that this letter was sent during the middle of the Republican National Convention week to four Democratic governors should make it crystal clear that this is nothing more than election year politics by an administration that is more concerned with the president's re-election campaign than protecting Michigan seniors. We will review this letter and respond as appropriate, however, Americans would all be better served if the Trump administration stopped the partisan games and focused on delivering a real plan to defeat COVID-19."
In an op-ed by the former national president of AARP and former president of AARP Michigan, Eric Schneidewind recently wrote: "The Whitmer administration implemented an aggressive nursing home strategy that closely followed CMS and CDC guidance. And the governor’s 'Stay Safe, Stay Home' order helped limit the spread overall and therefore mitigated the harm nursing homes would have felt ... I wish I could say the same for President Trump. A recently released U.S. Senate report on President Trump and his administration’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic in nursing homes found the Trump Administration failed to adequately prepare for and respond to the pandemic, despite early warning signs and overwhelming evidence COVID-19 would have a devastating impact on residents and nursing home workers."
