Gov. Whitmer, Lt. Gov. Gilchrist Statements on Introduction of Gun Violence Prevention Bills

LANSING, Mich.– Governor Gretchen Whitmer and Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist issued the following statements after gun violence prevention legislation was introduced in the Michigan Legislature.

Governor Whitmer Statement

"The time for only thoughts and prayers is over.

“As the Spartan community and Michiganders across the state heal after the horrific campus shooting last week, I am grateful to my partners in the legislature for turning pain into purpose and introducing commonsense gun safety legislation to enact universal background checks, safe storage laws, and extreme risk protection orders.

“Addressing gun violence is a top public safety priority. No student should have to look over their shoulder when they’re walking on campus. No family should have to worry about making it home after a trip to the grocery store or church. No Michigander should live in fear.

“We are in a unique position to get something done, and together, I know we will.”

Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist Statement

“We mourn the lives lost during last week’s horrific campus shooting at Michigan State University. Too many Michigan kids, parents, and families bear the scars of gun violence, and we all share a responsibility to respond to this crisis with collective action. This package of legislation proposes proven, commonsense tools that will reduce gun violence in Michigan. It is time for us to come together to ensure Michiganders can go to school, work, or their homes without fear of gun violence, and I look forward to working with our legislative partners to get this done.”

Public Support for Commonsense Reform

poll commissioned by the Detroit Regional Chamber from Glengariff Group conducted in November and December 2022 shows that a sizeable majority of Michiganders support commonsense gun violence prevention measures.

  • 90% support background checks, including 92% of independents and nearly 80% of Republicans
  • 74% support extreme risk protections orders, or “red flag” laws, including 80% of independents
  • 63% support safe storage laws, including 68% of independents
  • Gun safety legislation was the top priority for independent and Democratic voters
