Gov. Whitmer Secures Record Funding Per Pupil in New Education Budget
New school aid budget includes $400 million more in ongoing funding than FY24 and an additional $1 billion in one-time investments
LANSING, Mich. – Today, Governor Whitmer reaffirmed her commitment to fighting for students and teachers in Michigan’s public school system, delivering the largest investment in schools in our state's history for the sixth year in a row, including a $400 increase on average for every student in the state.
“As a parent, I know the importance of investing in our kids and our educators—whether they’re down in Kalamazoo or all the way up in Marquette,” said Governor Whitmer. “That’s why I made sure this budget makes direct investments in our schools and students, supplying them with the proper funding and support they need to ensure every child can get a world-class education right here in Michigan. I’ll work with anyone to improve learning outcomes so every student can succeed. Together, let’s get this done.”
The budget makes direct investments in Michigan’s students, allocating $598 million in ongoing payments to school districts across the state. The payments are equivalent to a 4% increase per pupil, representing an average $400 per pupil increase over FY24. In total, Governor Whitmer has increased per-pupil funding by 26% since taking office.
“Every Michigan student deserves the resources they need to be their best selves,” said Lt. Governor Garlin Gilchrist II. “This year’s education budget delivers record investments that outpace inflation and help schools invest in the issues that matter most, like school safety, mental health, and before- and after-school programs. We will continue to stand tall for students and open doors for the leaders of tomorrow.”
Governor Whitmer has been a staunch ally for students and teachers in Michigan’s public school system. By making specific and direct investments in Michigan’s students and schools, Governor Whitmer is ensuring every child is set up for success and can “Make it in Michigan."The FY25 budget reaffirms her commitment and builds upon the historic investments she has made throughout her time in office.
