February 28, 2019: The National Liberty Memorial Day
February 28, 2019
WHEREAS, African-Americans served honorably in the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812; and,
WHEREAS, after the War of 1812, the southern states passed laws and rules that restricted services for African-Americans until the Civil War, and many people are aware of African-Americans’ service in the Civil War; and,
WHEREAS, it is important that the world be aware that African-Americans were critical to the success of the Revolutionary War at the Founding of the Nation; and,
WHEREAS, the National Liberty Memorial will commemorate the 5,000 African-Americans who served in the Revolutionary War that most people are unaware of; and,
WHEREAS, there were Revolutionary War battles fought in Michigan, and there are graves of soldiers in this state;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim February 28, 2019, as the National Liberty Memorial Day in Michigan.
