March 17 - March 23, 2019: Michigan Surveyors Week

WHEREAS, the United States is well known for their exploration and mapping across North America, and people have depended on surveyors throughout history to resolve questions of land boundaries and provide the framework for the building of infrastructure; and,

WHEREAS, since the colonial era, surveyors have been community leaders, statesmen, influential citizens, and presidents of our nation, including George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Abraham Lincoln; and,

WHEREAS, surveyors determine essential measurements, relative positions of physical or cultural details above, on, or beneath the surface of the earth; and,

WHEREAS, the role of the professional surveyor has been, and continues to be, integral to the development and advancement of our state and nation; and,

WHEREAS, Surveyors Week is an opportunity to recognize the historic contributions of surveying and appreciate the new technologies that are constantly modernizing the profession; and,

WHEREAS, the State of Michigan is proud to recognize the dedicated men and women of this profession;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of the State of Michigan, do hereby proclaim March 17-23, 2019, as Surveyors Week in Michigan and commend its observance to all citizens.
