April 2019: Distracted Driver Awareness Month

WHEREAS, distracted driving includes any non-driving activity that takes attention away from the road; and,
WHEREAS, distracted driving represents visual, manual, and cognitive forms of distraction, including texting, eating, listening to loud music, and more; and,
WHEREAS, distracted driving is a fast-growing concern in terms of the safety of everyone who uses the roads; and,
WHEREAS, in 2016 there were more than 12,000 crashes in Michigan alone, resulting in 43 fatalities and more than 5,000 injuries; and,
WHEREAS, texting or dialing can take your eyes off the road for an average of 23.3 seconds, which increases the chances for accidents, injury, or death; and,
WHEREAS, taking one’s eyes off the road for even a short period of time is dangerous to the safety of themselves and others;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim the month of April 2019 as Distracted Driving Awareness Month.
