WHEREAS, the State of Michigan appreciates the importance of sports in fostering identity in religious and ethnic groups; and,
WHEREAS, Jewish Sports Heritage Association & Temple Israel of Lawrence (N.Y.), will recognize a long list of Jewish sports legends and a small group of people who are as proud of their heritage as they are about sports; and,
WHEREAS, sports help weave not only Jews, but other minority and immigrant groups into the American tapestry; and,
WHEREAS, Jewish Sports Heritage Association works to define a new vision for future Jewish athletes and share this with people across all walks of life; and,
WHEREAS, the State of Michigan wishes to join with Jewish Sports Heritage Association and Temple Israel of Lawrence in focusing public attention on the outstanding contributions of Jewish men and women in sports;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim the month of April 2019 as Jewish Sports Heritage Month in Michigan.
